To bring attention to the gun violence in Indianapolis, the Talking Guns Project, spearheaded by Ph.D. student Allison Luthe and Indiana Public Schools high school student DeCaree Lewis is making noise throughout Indiana.
“Iāve been to more teenager funerals than I could have ever imagined,” Luthe said in a press release. “Iāve watched other bright, talented young people go to jail for gun charges.”
The tandem interviewed ten people charged with a firearm-related crime within the last five years in Marion County.
The findings of the Talking Guns Project will be presented in a ten-minute video constructed by Lewis.
“Kids and guns donāt go together,” Lewis said in a press release. “Hopefully this video project will reduce gun violence, and teenagers will see theyāre not alone.”
The community is invited to engage with the findings and provide feedback at two upcoming workshops.
A couple of screening opportunities are being held for youth workers, probation officers, elected officials, mentors and child welfare workers.
Additionally, an invitation has been extended to Mayor of Indianapolis Joe Hogsett and the Office of Public Health and Safety. The screening workshops are being held at Butler University College of Education building, located at 1000 West 42nd Street.
The screenings will last approximately 60 minutes. The event is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required.

“We must start centering youth voices and listen to their experiences for solutions to gun violence,” Luthe said.
