A family is now grieving after news of a missing teen being found dead.

15-year-old Janiya Carr was reported missing by family members over the Halloween weekend. Police reports show she was officially reported missing on Monday.

“I just want the perpetrator to know if you ever wanted to see hurt in your life, you did a good job at it, but it’s not over. You got to feel my pain. I have to live with this every night,” said Demetria Boston, Carr’s mother.

Boston said the teen had two nieces on the way, and she will not be able to see her 16th birthday, which would have been later on this month.

The last time Boston spoke to her daughter was Friday, Oct. 27.

Janiya Carr: Missing

The 15-year-old Arsenal Tech high schooler called asking for pain medication.

“Niya was in a little pain, but now I’ve been in pain. No medication could take it away. We reported her missing, but the way Indianapolis runs, they’ll tell you, ‘She’s been running away before.’ When she runs away, she still calls,” said Boston.

“It’s not even to run away, it’s just to get away from them in the moment. Everybody feels like that. When somebody is gone a day or two, you don’t know what they’re going through, but they just need to get away. She would at least text me and said, ‘I love you my dear.’”

IMPD is conducting an investigation following the discovery of the teen.

Police responded to a report of a person in the 10200 block of Aristocrat North Drive, near North Mitthoefer Road and 42nd Street, shortly before noon on Nov. 1.

Officers found Carr’s body along a line of trees near Carriage House East apartments.

An arrest has been made in the fatal shooting.

The motive is not clear.

Janiya Carr: Found

“Why is all I want to know. I just know she went out with a fight. She is a fighter. She takes on the toughest battles and still makes it look good because that’s how I raised them. No matter what you keep going,” said Boston.

Andrew Holmes, an anti-violence activist from Chicago, is in town because his grandson was one of the victims from a Halloween party mass shooting that happened Sunday, Oct. 29.

Even though he was dealing with that separate incident, when Carr’s family reached out to him for help, he wanted to assist.

They passed out fliers in the apartment complex near where Carr’s body was found.

“We have this national hotline number. Sometimes we find people who say they don’t want to talk to the police department, so they call us to relay the message. We give them that option if they don’t want to be involved,” said Holmes.

Arrest made in the murder

On Thursday, Nov. 2 police arrested Tevis Walker, 34, for his alleged role in Carr’s murder.

It is unclear how Walker and Carr knew each other, or if they did.

Authorities learned that Walker worked for Carriage House East as a maintenance man, where Carr lived.

He also lived at the complex.

Walker was also arrested for an outstanding warrant out of Alabama, according to police.

19 minors have been shot and killed this year in Indianapolis.
