There are a lot of places around town that claim to serve authentic Mexican cuisine but the meal usually consists of shredded ground beef, golden taco shells accompanied by chips and some sort of cheese, not queso. At Cancun Mexican Restaurant, they serve the most authentic Mexican food you will find in the city. Those of Mexican descent prepare all of the food, so you know authentic meals are embedded within their philosophy.
The very first time I visited Cancun on West 86th Street was early last year during a lunch meeting. It was recommended I try the Wet Burrito, but I was hesitant because the name didnāt give it much appeal. Going against the grain, I ordered it anyway and it has become one of my favorite meals since!
Before my experience at Cancun I wasnāt much of a burrito person, but I couldnāt resist the grilled shrimp and chicken with Spanish rice rolled perfectly in a large flour tortilla. To top it off, literally, the tortilla is garnished with smooth queso to add just enough flavor to the dish.
Ever since that day, I discovered there are two more locations within the city, one on Keystone Avenue and another in Carmel. Passing by the Keystone location everyday while driving to work, intensified my desire for good Mexican food. Last week I decided I deserved a visit after eating pretty healthy the past few days.
At my usual 86th Street location, I was greeted at the table with homemade, fresh tortilla chips and house-made salsa, which is quite refreshing from the store-bought salsa I use when creating my own fiesta for dinner. Of course I settled on what I always go for, the burrito, but I studied the menu to discover other options.
I noticed right away the 15 varieties of 27oz. margaritas that were available. If youāve had a long day with the kids or at work, maybe one of the varieties of margaritas infused with Tequila may be helpful or if you really want to be brave, try the 44 oz. Loco Monster Margarita.
Outside of burritos and alcoholic beverages, customers can try popular dishes like the Fish Tacos stuffed with golden brown deep-fried white fish, house made tartar sauce, avocado slices and Spanish rice; or Joseās Ultimate Fajita with a mix of zucchini, carrots, mushrooms, broccoli and onions with your choice of protein.
If you still have room for dessert, this is a restaurant to enjoy the traditions of Mexican heritage. I was surprised to see Flan, a popular cream custard, on the menu as well as Fried Vanilla Ice Cream. These are definitely items you canāt get at your everyday pub restaurant.
If you are searching for traditional-style Mexican food, look no further than Cancun Mexican Restaurant.
