Mom gets 35 years for role in daughter’s death

An Indianapolis woman has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for her role in her 3-year-old daughter’s beating death.

Prosecutors say TaJanay Bailey died in November 2007 after Charity Bailey’s boyfriend repeatedly beat the child with a belt for not being potty trained.

Marion Superior Court Judge Kurt Eisgruber said Friday that Charity Bailey was passive in letting Lawrence Green abuse TaJanay. Green was sentenced last month to 65 years in prison.

Charity Bailey had pleaded guilty to four counts of felony neglect, including failing to seek medical treatment.

TaJanay’s death came four weeks after she was returned by child welfare workers to her mother despite evidence of earlier abuse.
