Long career, lots of laughs

“(Christopher Julius Rock III) It’s my real name. It was the worst name as a kid to have. They called me Piece of the Rock, Plymouth Rock, Joe Rockid, and Flintstones. Now they call me MISTER Rock.”

Mr. Rock, otherwise known as Chris Rock, known for his deep humor, wit and intelligence will be visiting Indianapolis, Dec. 29 at the Murat Theatre.

Before gracing the Murat stage, Rock has come a long way to get to where he is today. Known to some as a social commentator for his ability to confront grim topics covered in lewd humor, Rock got his start in comedy doing stand up in New York comedy clubs. Fellow funny man Eddie Murphy just so happened to see the 18-year-old’s show and was impressed.

Murphy offered Rock a small role in the 1987 movie “Beverly Hills Cop II” and Rock went on to play classic characters in classic films such as “CB4,” “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka,” “New Jack City,” “Boomerang,” “Pootie Tang” (Sa Da Tay), and most recently “I Think I Love My Wife.” Rock has three other movies slated for 2008.

It hasn’t always been Hollywood for the 42-year-old actor. Early on in his career, Rock was a cast member of the show that made many comedians the stars they are today — “Saturday Night Live.” During his three-year stint on the show, Rock also periodically guest-starred in fellow comedian Keenan Ivory Wayans’ sketch comedy series “In Living Color.”

He’s given comedy lovers, stand up, movies, sketch comedy, his own show, the “Chris Rock Show,” comedy albums, has won awards, and has even hosted the Academy Awards. Now Rock’s giving himself to his fans in the show, “Everybody Hates Chris.”

Now in its third season, “Everybody Hates Chris” is the story of a teenager growing up in New York during the early 1980s.

Rock narrates each episode and is somewhat different from his usual projects. Through the series and recent projects, some see Rock as more of a family man now that he’s become the father of two girls, Lola, 5, and Zahra, 3.

“I always say about my daughters, they save me from my miserable self. As a comedian, you could live in your head a lot. But when I’m with my kids and my family, it’s all about them,” said Rock in a previous interview. “Now that I have children, I realize taking care of my children is more fun than anything in the whole world.”

After many years of hard work and countless laughs, see Chris Rock for yourself at the Murat Theatre.

Tickets are now on sale and will be available at the Murat Centre Box Office, on-line at www.livenation.com, all Ticketmaster outlets, or Charge-by-Phone at (317) 239-5151.
