Ivy Tech to start ‘HONORS’ program

More by this author

Ivy Tech Community College is launching a new honors program in January, designed to recognize and develop the abilities of high achieving students. Ivy Tech’s HONORS Program will be initially offered only in the Central Indiana region, eventually expanding the program to all Ivy Tech campuses.

Initially, students admitted into the Ivy Tech HONORS Program will have the option of selecting from one of two degrees: Associate of Arts (AA) in Liberal Arts with Honors and Associate of Science (AS) in Liberal Arts with Honors. These transferable degrees offer a multi-disciplinary curriculum intended to help students develop critical thinking and analytical skills, global awareness and written and verbal communication.

“This is such an exciting new program for Ivy Tech students,” said Beth Borst, director of the Ivy Tech HONORS Program. “Students who wish to ‘go the extra mile’ will benefit from an accelerated degree tract with honors, smaller class sizes, greater interaction with faculty and peers, and a global experience. All of this will enhance a student’s two-year college experience at Ivy Tech and better prepare them for graduation and transfer to the four-year school of their choice.”

Ivy Tech’s HONORS Program is the most affordable honors program in the state. There is no additional cost to apply for the program and Ivy Tech’s tuition is nearly half the cost of other state schools. In addition to the cost savings, students who participate in the program will benefit from the smaller class sizes, with more direct contact and mentoring from the faculty. The HONORS Program will have special advisors assigned to work directly with the students in assisting them with course scheduling and registration. HONORS students will receive priority registration privileges, allowing them to register for classes earlier than other students. The program also offers the opportunities to participate in travel and global experiences.

Students interested in applying for Ivy Tech’s HONORS Program must be admitted to the college, complete an application for the HONORS Program and meet certain academic criteria.
