Holder renews commitment to civil rights

More by this author

Attorney General Eric Holder has pledged his commitment to revitalizing the civil rights division of the Department of Justice before civil rights icons Andrew Young and the Rev. Joseph Lowery.

Holder made his remarks Thursday at Morehouse College, where he participated in a ceremony to honor his sister-in-law, Vivian Malone Jones. Jones, who died in 2005, was the first black graduate of the University of Alabama ā€” facing down segregationist Gov. George Wallace on her first day of class ā€” and later became the director of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Holder says he and President Barack Obama are determined to reshape the federal judiciary to again make civil rights a priority in the department.
