Ind. legislator enters GOP race against Burton

More by this author

A fourth prominent Republican has decided to challenge longtime Indiana Congressman Dan Burton in next year’s GOP primary.

State Rep. Mike Murphy of Indianapolis announced his candidacy Thursday in Tipton at the vacant Getrag transmission plant that the company stopped building last year during a dispute with Chrysler.

Murphy is a former Marion County Republican chairman and said he was entering the race out of frustration with the economy and “stale leadership.”

Burton was first elected in 1982 and is Indiana’s longest-serving congressman. But he narrowly won last year’s primary in the 5th District over John McGoff, who is running again.

Former state Rep. Luke Messer of Shelbyville and former congressional candidate Brose McVey of Carmel also have entered the race.
