“Music is the universal language of mankind.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

To share and celebrate the many ways music brings cultures together, the Indiana Minority Business Magazine (IMBM) will present the Diversity Music Fest “One Mic, One Sound,” June 11 at the Blue Ribbon Pavilion located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

“I am so excited about this concert. We really wanted to host an event that promoted the spirit of inclusiveness, and music is just that – a common thread we all share. Music unites us,” said Shannon Williams, president and general manager of the IMBM.

Daddy Real Entertainment is the title sponsor of the Diversity Music Fest.

This inaugural event promises to link individuals together under the commonalities of music, and hopes to foster lasting relationships amongst different communities. Consultant, Jeffrey A. Clark, believes the concert is a great expression of the magazine’s mission, which is to be an informative, yet entertaining publication that’s reflective of all minorities. The IMBM is a quarterly publication that highlights successful minority and women professionals, while encouraging business growth and innovation throughout the state.

The Diversity Music Fest is among several activities presented by IMBM, including the annual Champions of Diversity Awards Dinner and statewide magazine release parties held each quarter.

What makes this festival a one-of-a-kind affair is that there are so many different genres of music under one roof.

“This is a chance to hear music you like, but also gives you an opportunity to discover other styles of music that maybe you just hadn’t had a chance to hear,” said Clark. “I suspect some people will come out of their comfort zone that night.”

During IMBM’s concert, music lovers will get a sample of rock, R&B, jazz, Latin, gospel, country and pop music. No matter what sound gets your toes tapping, magazine brass wanted every element to remain accessible and local.

Members of the selection committee scouted the city of Indianapolis and found the best in music. The seven participating bands already have a considerable following, and neophytes to their genre will be able to see firsthand why they are so popular.

Concert goers will be able to hear the music of Wildheart, who draws influence from early country music; Remedy, who loves to keep the crowd going with high energy dance, pop, classic and modern rock favorites; and Banda Pluma Blanca who joins styles and genres like techno band, duranguense, and tierra caliente, giving birth to the creation of a very unique style called Techno Calidu.

Other performers include pop sensation Kontraband Muzik; a jazz legend in his own right, Rob Dixon; Blue Soul Band, one of the premier R&B/jazz bands in Indianapolis; and national recording gospel artist and Indy native, Lamar Campbell and Spirit of Praise.

Doors open to the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at 5 p.m., and the concert will begin at 6 p.m. There will be an introductory performance by the Armed Forces as well as a special presentation from the color guard.

In addition to the bands, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase CDs and other items from area vendors.

Williams urges everyone to purchase tickets to the concert that promises to be a unique event that bridges the gap between communities.

“The Diversity Music Fest is a great way to see some of Indy’s most talented artists for a great price, all under one roof. I encourage everyone to attend this premier concert,” added Williams.

Each week, the Indianapolis Recorder will feature profiles about the festival’s artists to give readers a closer glimpse into what the event is all about – inclusion.
