Brics offers plenty of options

More by this author

Winter, with its frigid temperatures, overcast days and snarled traffic, will arrive soon.

There are, however, still some mild days ahead for us to enjoy great ice cream. Even on cold days, a flavorful frozen treat might be what is needed to satisfy your sweet tooth and soothe your soul.

Fortunately, Brics Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station is open year-round to accommodate our need for incredible ice cream.

The locally owned and operated business was established by entrepreneur couples, Nonie and David Vonnegut-Gabovitch, and Jennifer and David DuBow, who pride themselves on “making everyone’s experience an enjoyable one.”

Located in the city’s Broad Ripple area, Brics opened during the spring of 2010 to plenty of positive reviews from food critics, who endorsed it as one of the most customer friendly places to grab a dessert or cup of coffee.

The establishment offers more than 40 different flavors of ice cream, which means that there is something available for even the pickiest of eaters or, in more a sophisticated term, those with “discriminating taste.”

Of course, customers will find traditional flavors such as strawberry, rainbow sherbet, cookies ‘n’ cream, cotton candy and cookie dough. They will also encounter Brics’ fun and unique trademark options, such as Broad Ripple Blackberry, Village Fudge, Monon Tracks (named after the Monon Trail), French Silk, Butler Pecan (as in Butler University) and Whistle Stop Wake Up.

Yellow Cake Batter, Chocolate Malt Supreme and Caramel Times Three have become increasingly popular flavors.

Brics is the local provider of the recipe made famous by the Michigan-based Sherman Ice Cream Co., which has become known in the Midwest for its quality. It has a very rich taste that is a little creamier than ice cream found in typical restaurants and grocery stores.

Brics ice cream is placed in awesome homemade waffle cones, and is available along with a variety of shakes and malts. If something cold is not what you need, then you can simply warm up with a cup of coffee or tea near the fireplace at Brics, which is housed in the old Monon Railway Station on 64th Street, right off the Monon Trail.

Due to its location, Brics has become a popular stop for pedestrians, joggers and cyclists on the Monon who stop by to get refreshed and relax. Although it is in a converted, century-old rail station, Brics’ owners have invested in the development of a cozy modern décor, complete with up-to-date conveniences such as free Wi-Fi, a water station for guests to fill their water bottles and a spacious outdoor deck that is perfect for the spring and summer.

Inside, seating is very comfortable and family friendly, with a special kids area with “little people” seating and books for children.

During the their first year in business, the owners of Brics have been involved in several community projects, especially those that support good treatment of animals, including a recent drive to get supplies for the Humane Society of Indianapolis. This support is also offered from a business perspective, as patrons are able to bring their pets on the deck, and dogs are often given a free “doggie dip” treat.

Overall, the staff at Brics is friendly and helpful, even offering the option to sample a few flavors if you are having trouble making a selection. You can also take the ice cream with you in pint, quart or half gallon containers to enjoy at home. Catering is available for private parties and events.
