El Rodeo – Authentic, affordable and fast

More by this author

Recently, I saw a minister from Detroit who was here in Indianapolis to speak at a revival service.

While making a point during his sermon, he talked about how much he loves Mexican style food, and especially enjoys going to Taco Bell.

I did not get a chance to speak with him, but I wish I could have shared some information about one of the authentic Mexican restaurants in our city. While I also appreciate the legendary convenience of Taco Bell, sometimes it’s nice to get away from the processed stuff and get an authentic Mexican entrée actually prepared by – you guessed right – Mexicans.

El Rodeo, a local Mexican restaurant company with several locations, caters to the needs of people who want the convenience and simplicity of a fast food joint, but also the variety and quality products of a full service Mexican restaurant.

El Rodeo is often cited in consumer surveys as a good option for several reasons: reasonable prices and a good selection of menu options. I have discovered that the location north on Allisonville Road are particularly worth visiting.

Servers are usually friendly and prompt, taking you to the comfortable seating area after a very brief wait. Any questions the customer asks about the selections are answered in a very helpful manner. These people at least appear to want your experience to be enjoyable and see you return.

One favorite of mine is the spicy burrito, a folded flour tortilla with beef on one side, and chicken on the other, satisfying your desire for both and providing double pleasure. The burrito is also filled with rice and beans, and topped with El Rodeo’s homemade salsa. And if that isn’t enough, cheese, sour cream and beef tips are placed around it.

El Rodeo’s version of a Mexican staple, the burrito, is very flavorful, filling and worth every penny. If you ever wondered what the culinary equivalent to fireworks is, this is it.

Judging by what was seen being requested by and served to other patrons, popular menu options include salsa and chips, quesadilla rodeo, enchiladas, chicken fajitas, the burrito marina (for those who like seafood) and El Rodeo’s signature margaritas.

The chicken and rice soup is meaty, has a nice kick to it, and is excellent for those really cold days.

El Rodeo’s food satisfies your senses while being gentle on your wallet/purse. Prices are comparatively low, with frequent lunch specials that cost no more than $4.

If you ever have a special guest who wants to know where the real Mexican food in Indianapolis is, take them with pride to El Rodeo.
