More by this author

Collectors and art enthusiasts from around the world are expected at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art’s sixth annual Quest for the West Art Show and Sale, an invitational art exhibition and fixed-price sale featuring 50 of the nation’s top Western artists.

The intimate event provides a unique opportunity for veteran and novice collectors to meet and interact with artists. Also happening on Sept. 10 is the Rockmount Ranch Wear trunk show in the Eiteljorg Museum Store.

Opening weekend activities on Saturday, Sept. 10, include the art sale, a gala reception, demonstrations and opportunities to meet participating artists. Among the honors presented during opening weekend will be a Purchase Award that will recognize creative excellence and add an important artwork to the museum’s permanent collection.

Last year’s Purchase Award went to Arturo ChĆ”vez for his painting, Mt. Wilson Winter. The artist notes that “I have attempted to convey a sense of the quiet stillness of the fresh snowfall on the red rocks just north of the city of Sedona.” The painting is now featured in the Eiteljorg’s Art of the American West gallery.

Last year, George Hallmark was named Quest for the West Artist of Distinction, an honor that includes an special exhibition during this year’s sale and show.

The retrospective, entitled Sol y Sombra: The Paintings of George Hallmark, features works from museums and from private collections rarely seen by the public. The show opens Sept. 9.

Reservations are required for weekend activities and participation costs $250 per person ($225 for Eiteljorg Museum members) and includes an exhibition catalog, bid book and attendance at all related events. For more information about Quest for the West or to complete a reservation form, visit www.quest.eiteljorg.org.

The exhibition of artwork will open to the public on Sept. 11, and will remain on display until Oct. 9.

Guests will also want to be sure to stop in the Eiteljorg Museum Store for the Rockmount Ranch Wear trunk show. They will find the finest examples of Western wear including the snap-front shirt invented by Rockmount and worn by celebrities across the globe. The trunk show will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 10.

The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art is celebrating its 20th year of inspiring appreciation and understanding of the art, history and cultures of the American West and the indigenous peoples of North America. The museum is located in White River State Park.
