Not just another burger joint

When I first saw Jaggers’s signage boasting chicken, burgers and salads, I rolled my eyes. The restaurant is across the street from a Wendy’s and a Steak ‘n Shake, and it shares a parking lot with Five Guys. What could they possibly offer that wasn’t already available?

But on a recent afternoon, my husband and I were heading north through Greenwood and trying to decide if we should stop and eat. As the discussion dragged on, our prospects dwindled. We settled on Jaggers after we’d passed most of our standbys and completed a mental inventory of our lousy food options at home.

Our first impression was a good one: Before we even made it across the parking lot, two employees had come out to hold the doors open and greet us. I’m not sure if it’s because we had our hands full with a baby carrier and a diaper bag, or if they were just bored during the slow hours between lunch and dinner, but either way, we appreciated the gesture.

I sometimes get nervous when trying to navigate an unfamiliar menu, but I didn’t have that issue here; the employees didn’t rush us, and the menu was refreshingly straightforward. As the signage suggests, the offerings include chicken (sandwiches and tenders), burgers and salads, plus a few side items, milkshakes and desserts.

I opted for the Crazy Good Cheeseburger, which is a double with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Jaggers sauce, with a side of fries and a drink. My husband got the bacon cheeseburger (same burger, just add bacon), a side of coleslaw and a drink. It was not cheap; our total came to around $20.

Looking around the restaurant, I was impressed by how clean it was. There wasn’t even a stray straw wrapper on the floor or any splashes of soda on the counter by the soda machine. The decor was more upscale than the typical fast-food dining room. There was also a pretty exciting array of sauces beyond the usual, including packets of jalapeno ketchup and Sriracha ketchup.

Our food was ready before we’d even finished filling our drinks and browsing the sauce lineup, but I didn’t get the impression that it had been premade or was otherwise not fresh. In fact, it was one of the freshest-tasting fast-food burgers I’ve ever had. The produce was fantastic and flavorful, and I’m excited to go back and try one of Jaggers’s salads. The restaurant’s website says they bake their own buns and make their sauces from scratch, and the quality really does come across in the final product. Sides-wise, the shoestring fries were warm, peppery and crispy … just how I like them. I didn’t get the rundown on the coleslaw, but my husband can be a tough coleslaw critic, and he ate it all without complaint.

Our experience was so positive that I have already been for a second visit. That time, I chose the drive-thru and opted for the spicy chicken sandwich with fries. Once again, the customer service was superb, and the food was delicious. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a Jaggers salad (and probably a milkshake, too) to get the full experience.
