Grants available for women’s health

More by this author

Communities looking for ways to increase physical activity and improve nutrition for women now have the opportunity to apply for a mini-grant through INShape Indiana and the Office of Women’s Health at the Indiana State Department of Health.

“We are so pleased to have this opportunity to align a top five priority of our Office of Women’s Health with the statewide efforts and success of the INShape program,” said Morgan McGill, director, Office of Women’s Health. “We hope communities will be encouraged to apply for an award to bolster their efforts in preventing chronic disease and motivating people to increase their physical activity and eat healthier foods.”

Made possible through a donation from the Coca-Cola Co., the goal of the 2011 Community Mini-Grants project is to encourage collaboration among local health organizations to help better the health of women in their communities. County organizations will need to work together in completing the application and must submit a letter of support from their local health department to be eligible for an award.

Applicants may plan and develop their own initiative based on their county’s need assessments and health planning efforts, or they may choose a model program aimed at motivating women to begin walking and increasing their physical activity called “Women Out Walking” (W.O.W.).

Awards range from $1,000 to $3,000. The Office of Women’s Health will provide the application, requirements and instructions and resources at http://www.in.gov/isdh/18061.htm.

“We hope communities will be innovative and creative and will incorporate the unique attributes of their communities to plan activities that are relevant and meaningful to their target audience,” said McGill. “We believe these health promotion efforts will spread from the women to their families as women take steps to help themselves and their loved ones create positive change.”

Applications will be accepted until June 27 and may be submitted by mail or e-mail to:
