Lincoln Square Pancake House

More by this author

During his political career Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s 16th president, enjoyed visiting Indiana, the state where he spent his childhood.

If he was alive today and visited Indianapolis, it is likely he would enjoy breakfast at Lincoln Square Pancake House. Initially Lincoln would probably check out the restaurant because it shares his name. However, he’d end up coming back because of the good food and presidential service.

Economic difficulties have forced breakfast restaurant chains to close some locations in the Indianapolis area. Yet, in the midst of America’s financial mess, locally owned Lincoln Square has grown into several locations throughout Central Indiana.

I undertook a journalistic mission to find out why, and stopped by the location at 56th Street and Emerson Avenue.

Immediately, I could sense that Lincoln Square would be my kind of place. It has a lively atmosphere with a friendly, family-oriented vibe that places you at ease.

Lincoln Square is known primarily for regular breakfast favorites such as pancakes, waffles, country biscuits and omelets. However, it also serves many lunch and dinner items on its diverse menu, including a variety of burgers, sandwiches, wraps and salads.

Some standout breakfast choices I considered included the Spanish omelet with chorizo sausage, peppers and spicy sauce; the Rancho Burrito egg sandwich and Art’s Tex Mex breakfast skillet.

Eventually, I settled on a restaurant staple, the Lincoln Square Pancake Combo, which includes a short stack of pancakes, two eggs, three sausage links, four strips of bacon, hot coffee and a glass of juice – all for $8.99.

The pancakes, which I ordered with apple topping, were light and had a slight vanilla flavor, the eggs were made just right, and the meat items had a flavorful “kick” to them, which is important because I have outright disdain for bland food.

My server was helpful, quick and attentive throughout the visit.

Earlier, I had noticed that many of the lunch and dinner items on the menu also looked great, such as the Hoosier Pork tenderloin sandwich, the Dixie Chicken salad with friend chicken, Triple Decker club sandwiches, the Deep Sea Sub.

Another popular item seemed to be the Greek Gyro Pita, which has gyro meat, sliced onions, tomatoes, lettuce and Lincoln Square’s signature cucumber sauce.

Also popular is the Clubhouse Grille sourdough sandwich.

At the end of your meal, Lincoln Square adds a classy and courteous touch by asking if you would like a refill of your drink to take home with you. Prices are also reasonable: depending on what you order, two individuals can leave feeling satisfied after spending as little as $15.

With generous portions, affordable prices and the kind of decent customer care that is rare, you’ll be doing yourself a favor to investigate why Lincoln Square is so successful.
