Martin University removed from accreditation probation

Martin University, one of the region’s few Black institutions of higher learning and a staple of the Indianapolis community, learned recently that its time on probation has come to an end.

In February of 2014, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools placed the university on probation citing its “extremely low” record of matriculation, among other issues, including finance and administration.

According to documentation released by the accreditor, the commission’s board of trustees took the action because of concerns related to the faculty and staff; student retention, persistence and completion; resources; and governance and administrative structures.

It went on to cite a lack of high-quality programs and student services.

In July of 2015, some issues remained and Martin stayed on probation with the HLC.

On Wednesday, Martin announced it had received a positive response from the HLC and the probation had been removed contingent upon Martin’s ability to file a report (due April 2019) about its continued progress in enrollment, finances and retention. The university is also required to host a comprehensive evaluation for Reaffirmation of Accreditation in the 2020-21 academic year.

“We are excited to have been notified by the Higher Learning Commission that its board of trustees voted to remove the sanction of probation from Martin University,” said Martin University President Dr. Eugene White in a written statement. “This action was warranted based on materials from the university’s most recent comprehensive evaluation. This helps add to a tremendous year for the university. The faculty, staff,

administration and Martin board of trustees are very pleased and proud of the progress and success of the university.”

This year marks the university’s 40th anniversary, and several events, including a Founder’s Day luncheon (April 13), Celebration Dinner (Aug. 9) and President’s Breakfast (Oct. 25) are planned.
