INDIANA MINORITY HEALTH COALITION CELEBRATES MINORITY HEALTH MONTH

More by this author

For the 16th consecutive year, the Indiana Minority Health Coalition will host its Annual Luncheon during Minority Health Month at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis on April 13, 2011.

IMHC is a statewide non-profit organization that exists to eliminate minority health disparities.

The organization was formed by minority leaders in 1992 to operate as a central voice and conduit for the concerns of minority citizens and communities in helping Indiana improve minority health outcomes.

Through this central voice IMHC regularly interacts with policy makers at the state and federal level. In fact, IMHC enjoys a close ally relationship with the Indiana Black Legislature Caucus. Recently IMHC produced a video and report, in conjunction with the Indiana Black Legislature Caucus that outlines the work and history of IMHC in addressing health disparities.

Local affiliates and community based partners are located in Gary, Michigan City, South Bend, Elkhart, Ft. Wayne, Logansport, Lafayette, Marion, Muncie, Anderson, Kokomo, Noblesville, Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Richmond, Greenwood, Columbus, Bloomington, Jeffersonville and Evansville. The statewide American Indian Center headquartered in Indianapolis is also a partner.

Each year IMHC selects a health condition to highlight during its luncheon. In 2007 IMHC featured recording artist, Patti LaBelle who helped highlight diabetes. In 2008 survivor of heart disease gave riveting testimonials as IMHC focused on heart health. Last year Tonya Lewis-Lee, wife of filmmaker, Spike Lee, and national spokesperson for the federal Office of Minority Health, delivered a keynote address on infant mortality.

THE MANY FACES OF CANCER

This year IMHC’s luncheon focuses on a health condition that has touched virtually every family. That condition is cancer.

Through testimonials from cancer survivors, the audience will hear how families and individuals have coped with this disease. These stories of courage, conviction, and persistence will highlight the strengths and challenges survivors face.

The luncheon also will feature the historical video IMHC recently produced.

So, in addition to hearing and learning how community members have dealt with cancer, the audience will also learn more about the breadth and depth of IMHC’s work and that of its affiliates and local community based partners. These local partners will be available on site to provide information on the work they carry out in local communities.

There will also be a silent auction featuring electronics, food/restaurant gift cards, hotel stays, gift baskets, and many, many other delightful items.

As is its tradition, IMHC will also recognize and honor a coalition of the year and a rising star coalition for the outstanding work carried out in their local community.

SEATS STILL AVAILIBLE!

Seats for the luncheon are still available. Seats cost $50. A table of 10 may be purchased for $500.
