Local organizations came together for a transformative event at Martin University for Martindale-Brightwood residents.

The Community Family Fun & Health Service Day brought a day of education, health services, community engagement and awareness to what is being done in the neighborhood.

The event focused on information from Citizens Energy Group on the replacement of lead pipes in the Martindale-Brightwood area.

“This is not a one and done thing. We’re hoping to do more throughout the summer,” said Garry Holland with the NAACP, “It’s needed. The people and residents need to have an understanding on what is going on with their community and why.”

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management displayed soil screening equipment and EPA training about lead in soil.

The Marion County Public Health Department provided free lead testing for children and expecting mothers. Holland said the event had over 200 people throughout the day and 28 people were tested.

Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield hosted a community baby shower with the Harrison Center for the Arts offering face paintings and art activities.

The first 125 participating attendees received a $50.00 gift card.

“EPA had three tables at the event where we shared information with attendees, about recent intrusion sampling and remediation that is going on in Martindale-Brightwood” said Brittany Kiessling, social scientist at the EPA in the Office of Research and Development.

“We had scientists there sharing information about lead pipes and drinking water filters that residents can use to filter lead from drinking water. I also lead interactive activities.”

Kiessling said the EPA was there to gather information about area residents’ experiences with how their community might be changing over time due to the environment, cleanup work that has been going on and redevelopment that has happened on those remediated sites.

The goal for community members was accessing information and speaking with officials and agency members.

It was an opportunity for them to ask questions and learn more about the work that had taken place.

Holland said, to continue the efforts, the NAACP plans to do lead training in areas with the EPA and One Voice organization.
