The Indianapolis Public Schools’ Average Daily Membership (ADM) count is 31,703, according to figures submitted Sept. 19 by the Office of Student Assignment to the Indiana Department of Education. The enrollment figure must be reconciled before it becomes official.
IPS’ enrollment lags 494 students behind last year’s count, which IPS says is a welcome change from years’ past, when enrollment drops of more than 1,000 students were the norm. The dip is impressively low given the fact that families could have opted out of the district by using taxpayer-funded vouchers or to attend charter schools.
“Parents see that IPS offers more choices than any other school district, and they understand that the grass isn’t always greener at charter or private schools,” said Superintendent Eugene G. White. “Despite the rhetoric coming from political circles, parents do see IPS as a quality choice for their students.”
Based on the unreconciled numbers, IPS continues to be the state’s largest district, with Fort Wayne Community Schools placing second with an ADM of 31,022.
