Photos: African American evolution at the Global Village Museum

JAWS fellowship participants visited Indy’s Global Village Museum in July 2026 to create storytelling projects using new journalism and photography skills.

Student fellow Marte’nello Hurst presented a series of photographs as his final project, “African American Evolution on Display,” an exploration of Black history. See the photos below from his visit to the Global Village Museum.

The Global Village Museum showcased the strict laws and policies enforced on African Americans and enslaved people by displaying a wanted sign for enslaved people with a noose hanging nearby.

The Ku Klux Klan was a group of individuals that had racially motivated beliefs, which led to brutal acts against African Americans. This photograph shows that some actions based on their beliefs could be very graphic and brutal.

The Black Lives Matter movement raised awareness of the black communities beliefs, pictures of the movement and other symbolic meanings to the movement were to show (caucasian in particular) that the African American community were fed. The museum artifacts, displayed BLM referenced posters and text.

Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist known for her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Rosa Parks was arrested after not giving up her bus seat despite the laws.
