On Aug.9, the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana is expecting at least 10 million pop tabs to be dropped on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis at its 9th annual Pop Tab Drop. The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. will include music by Pop & the Twisters band and a special appearance by Ronald McDonald. The worldās largest pop tab will also be available for photos, and kids will have a chance to win prizes playing the pop tab toss.
Donors can bring their pop tabs to the circle and drop them into the collection containers, or they may simply go through the drive-thru lanes and volunteers will help unload their pop tabs. Last year, the House received close to $50,000 from its pop tab donation program. With 58 bedrooms and a full House almost every night, the proceeds from the recycled tabs help bridge the gap between the $75 it costs to provide nightly lodging to each family and the $15 donation they are asked to contribute.
2013 marks the 18th year of the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana pop tab program ā the most successful pop tab recycling program in the nation. Thanks to the efforts of Hoosier pop tab collectors and friends around the world, the House has recycled over 1 billion tabs since the program began in 1995.
The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana provides a supportive home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill or injured children receiving medical care at Riley Hospital for Children and other Indianapolis-area hospitals. In 2012, 1,402 families temporarily called the House āhome,ā including 1,305 from 88 Indiana counties, 93 families from other states, and 4 international families.
