The county commissioners president in western Indiana’s Vigo County is pleading guilty to federal methamphetamine distribution charges.
The plea agreement signed by David W. Decker was filed Wednesday with the federal court in Terre Haute. Decker is charged with distributing 3.25 grams of a substance containing methamphetamine last November.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Blackington said a drug bust in December in which 20 people were arrested prompted the investigation of Decker.
Blackington has said that bust included two separate rings of suspected meth traffickers. He said one group brought meth from a source in Indianapolis and distributed it in the Terre Haute area.
He said the other group acquired meth in Indianapolis and Arizona and transported it to Terre Haute for distribution to other dealers.
The two groups were responsible for the distribution of 3 to 5 pounds of meth per week in Vigo County, he said.
Vigo County, in central Indiana on the border with Illinois, led the state in the number of meth labs seized in 2004 and 2005.
The plea agreement says Decker must serve at least five months in prison and resign as a county commissioner. Decker became a commissioner in 2007 and has been the board’s president since January 2008.
The Associated Press left a message seeking comment from Decker’s attorney, William G. Smock.
