Restaurant Review: Foundry Provisions

More by this author

One particular day, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. After a long prayer requesting a better attitude, some morning news, a long shower and a cheery wardrobe selection, I was ready to begin my day.

My extensive chat with God and a shower were well needed but left little time for me to pack my lunch. I was able to stave off hunger with a waffle, but come lunchtime, my Eggo had long gone. I remembered a small eatery called Foundry Provisions on 16th and Alabama streets in the historic Herron-Morton Place neighborhood.

I hopped in my car and headed for the restaurant. Foundry Provisions doesn’t have a parking lot, but there was plenty of free parking on the street.

Going in, I knew their menu was humble, but it contained items your mother would be proud of you for choosing. Foundry Provisions’ selections also seemed simply delicious. I knew it wouldn’t take me long to figure out what I wanted to eat.

After a quick skim of the menu, I decided on the Kurt V hot pressed sandwich made with grilled Portobello, roasted red pepper, spinach, provolone and garlic aioli. I ordered a Boylan creme soda. All together, my lunch was about $10.

Honestly, I thought for that price, my lunch should have come with fruit or chips or something, but decided not to get myself upset, especially since I had worked so hard to calm myself earlier in the day.

While I waited, I did a bit of people watching and discovered Foundry Provisions has become a neighborhood hangout. The small restaurant was simultaneously busy but relaxed, as professionals ordered lunch, dined with friends or colleagues or used Foundry’s tables to feverishly work on their computers.

During this downtime, I also discovered Foundry Provisions serves breakfast. That made sense, because although it was about 12:30 p.m., aromatic coffee filled the air. During morning hours, hungry individuals can have a breakfast sandwich, a bowl of granola or oatmeal, fruit, pastries from Circle City Sweets, cinnamon-sugar toast or a bagel made fresh by Shapiro’s Deli.

Finally my name was called, and I headed back to the office. I knew my lunch was technically vegetarian, but I didn’t care. It smelled and looked delicious!

I took one bite and discovered why Foundry Provisions is so hot. Their food is incredibly delicious. Every flavor meshed so well together, and the garlic aioli was the cherry on top of this flavorful sandwich. All of the ample veggies were perfectly prepared, and the bread was fresh and even added to the gumbo of flavors in my mouth.

I think I found a new sandwich spot. Next time I’ll get the Tarkington made with smoked turkey, whole grain mustard, provolone, tomato and romaine. Other hot pressed sandwiches include the Harrison made with ham from Smoking Goose; the Morton made with Mortadella, artichokes and a spicy Sriracha mayo; and the Auburn, another vegetarian sandwich made with fresh mozzarella, basil pesto and tomato.

Although I was cheap and didn’t get any extras, Foundry Provisions does offer tasty treats to accompany your breakfast or lunch such as sodas, chips, cookies and even frozen goodies from Nicey Treat.
