Lessons from the presidential primary race

More by this author

Indiana’s primary election is only days away, and while there are two people who analysts predict as each political party’s winner, it is still immensely important to vote on May 3.

Turnout is key. Over the past several months, I’ve followed the presidential race closely, often grimacing at some of the things candidates from both parties said or did.

The race has been grueling, and the rhetoric each political candidate spewed often left me asking questions like, “What was he thinking when he said that?” or “Why in the world did she do that?” I will admit, some candidates had me questioning them far more than other candidates, but I digress. Rather than focusing on the negative aspects of these highly contested races, I will use this column space to focus on the good that has been accomplished, while also encouraging you to be a change-maker in your own right by voting next Tuesday.

Diversity

One positive aspect of this particular group of candidates is the level of diversity that was evident early on. Think about it: Collectively, there were more female and ethnic minority candidates running than ever before. The fact that we had multiple women, an African-American male and two Hispanic males with their sights on the presidency says a lot about the direction America is going in the future. Such diversity is tremendous, because it demonstrates a shift in societal norms. While I didn’t agree with many of the perspectives of the aforementioned, I was pleased to see such a diverse pool, which gives me hope for our future.

Increased awareness

If there is one thing this presidential primary has taught us, it is the need to be aware of the views and perspectives of political candidates. I mean really, really, really be aware of their perspectives! Throughout this election cycle, there have been candidates who openly degraded and disrespected specific groups. There have been candidates who want to take some of our basic rights away, as well as candidates who are ill-informed on major issues that are integral to the role of president. Because of this, more and more Americans are becoming better educated about politics in general and top agenda items in particular. That is great, because eventually, we will get where we need to be in regards to having credible and accountable elected officials in office locally and nationally.

Participation

Say what you want about Republican front-runner Donald Trump, but he has ignited a strong support base that not only shows up in droves, but also is actively advocating for him through their votes. In other words, Trump supporters aren’t just saying they support him; they are proving it with their actions on Election Day. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton supporters are doing much of the same. What has been and will continue to be significant in this year’s presidential race is the voter turnout. We must not rest on our laurels and magically think our candidate of choice will win. We have to exercise our right to vote. Local and national polls have reported significant upsurges in voter participation, and that proves Americans are engaged. The person who eventually wins the race will prove which camp was strongest.

Young voters

Bernie Sanders has more successfully garnered young voters than any of the other four remaining presidential candidates. Sanders took a note from President Obama’s 2008 presidential election when he targeted younger voters and grassroots representatives. Engaging younger generations is what will keep this country moving forward progressively. The millennials in particular possess strong diversity skills relative to their perspectives on ideas and solutions, race and inclusion. Such progressive thinking is needed. The time is now.

Remember, Election Day is May 3. Be sure to vote!
