The IPS Board of School Commissioners selected Leroy Robinson, a social studies teacher in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, to fill a vacant at-large seat.
Robinson attended numerous IPS schools throughout grades K-8; he completed his education at North Central High School.
Robinson is active in education and youth issues. He has been a regular columnist covering education issues for the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper, and he has hosted numerous televised community affairs programs focusing on youth and education issues.
Robinson wrote in the questionnaire he submitted as part of his application to be a School Board candidate that, “I am seeking a position on the IPS Board because I want to continue my role as a career educator and have the ability to create and support policies that will continue to build upon the great tradition of IPS.”
Robinson was selected by a 4-2 vote over candidates Michael Cohen, Cheryl Hall-Russell, Leona Frank, Elizabeth Gore and Tim Streett.
In welcoming Robinson to his new position, IPS Superintendent Eugene G. White said, “I’m looking forward to working with you, as I’m sure we all are.”
Robinson fills the seat left vacant by Olgen Williams, who stepped down in December to become deputy mayor of public and neighborhood affairs.
Under Indiana law, the finalist selected to fill the at-large position will serve until the next election, which is May 2008. At that time, the individual must run in the May 2008 primary if he or she is interested in completing the full term, which ends in 2010.
