Square Rootz Deli: innovative and cheap

More by this author

I love a hearty meal, but now that the weather is getting warm, I find myself wanting something light but filling. Sandwiches are great year round, but I recently stumbled upon a deli that I have a feeling will be a restaurant staple come this summer – Square Rootz Deli.

Located in the Fountain Square District (one of the hidden gem areas of the city), the eatery has a ā€˜50s diner, rare finds gift shop, casual restaurant, flavorful food-made easy type of feel to it.

The good news is that its menu is well thought out and has something for every palate. The bad news is that everything on their menu seems good!

Hmmm. Should I get the spinach melt with Square Rootz’ freshly made spinach dip, swiss cheese, spinach, red onion and tomato on grilled multi grain bread, or should I get the Cranny Horsey Turkey wrap with turkey, lettuce, tomato and cranberry horseradish spread?

The HAMwaiian sounds good too with ham, turkey, pineapple, barbecue sauce and smoked gouda on challah bread. Or maybe I should stick to the deli classic – the Reuben sandwich with corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss and 1,000 Island dressing grilled on rye bread.

Most families have their own version of meatloaf, but I’m curious to see how Square Rootz’ meatloaf sandwich fares.

I decided to get the turkey melt with turkey, gruyere cheese, honey mustard, spinach and tomato on grilled challah bread. It was so delicious and was the perfect meal to get me through the afternoon.

For those who don’t have a cultivated palate or just want something simple, you can always build your own sandwich. They have a host of meats, breads, spreads and toppings.

I should have ordered the Grahamwich to-go because it would have made the perfect dessert. It consists of gooey warm marshmallow and butterscotch between graham crackers served ala mode and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

The name of this establishment is called Square Rootz, but there is nothing square about their food. These food innovators have taken something as simple as the sandwich (or wrap) and experimented with well-known flavors and textures.

What also makes Square Rootz a must go spot is the fact that nothing on their menu is more than $8. With gas prices being so up and down, you can afford to have a delicious and filling lunch. They also cater and have a kids menu.

They may have a lot of great food, but I’m confident you’ll be satisfied with your meal and want to go back and try something new.

Their wraps, sandwiches, salads and other culinary items have amazing ingredients, but what also made Square Rootz memorable for me was the Dad’s Root Beer I had to wash down my Turkey Melt (made with Boar’s Head products, might I add).

Any ā€˜ol restaurant can serve their customers fountain drinks, but Square Rootz offers clientele specialty bottled drinks such as Boylan brand Creme Soda that pairs nicely with any meal.

It’s the little touches that make Square Rootz a place you must try.
