Playwright and actor Mary Armstrong-Smith mines a chaotic childhood for her newest one-woman show, “Box Full of Darkness,” which will open at IndyFringe 2011 on Aug. 20.
The play takes its title from Mary Oliver’s poem “The Uses of Sorrow,” which says in part:
“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.”
Armstrong-Smith chronicles a life ruled by mentally ill and addicted parents with an eye for detail and the zest of a life-long storyteller. While at times shocking, “Box Full of Darkness” highlights the inexplicable hope and humor that emerges from pain.
Armstrong-Smith is a standup comic and actor whose previous IndyFringe show, “Garden Variety Neurotic” was well received. She serves as the Community Partners Director for Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, a division of The Villages.
Show dates and times are:
Aug. 20 – 9 p.m.
