Planned Parenthood extends care again

Planned Parenthood of Indiana (PPIN) has reported that thanks to contributions from individuals in 46 states and multiple countries, it will be able to extend care to its established Medicaid patients through at least June 15.

PPIN has received more than $100,000 in donations since the last week of the legislative session. That’s when lawmakers approved a measure to prohibit the state from entering into contracts with, or granting to, any entities (other than hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers) that provide abortions.

Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the law on May 10 and effectively cut off 9,300 PPIN Medicaid patients from their preferred provider.  However, PPIN has been able to cover the costs of Medicaid patients’ care so that they can continue to receive uninterrupted health care services.

While encouraging, these donations are a temporary fix. PPIN is scheduled to argue its case for an injunction in U.S. District Court on June 6. However, the judge may not rule on that date.

“We are delighted that this astounding outpouring of donations from around the world continues – using those generous gifts to provide Pap tests, birth control and STD testing and treatment to our Medicaid patients is absolutely the right thing to do,” said PPIN President and CEO Betty Cockrum. “This gives our patients the security that we will be there for them while the judge deliberates the merits of the request for an injunction.”
