Black History Month Student Poetry & Essay Contest

In recognition of Black History Month, The Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper is inviting local students to participate in our poetry and essay contest. Students in grades 3 through 12 can submit an original poem or essay celebrating Black History Month.

The deadline for entries is Monday, February 17th at 5 p.m. The winning submissions will be published online at indianapolisrecorder.com.

Students can either enter one poem or one essay on the form HERE.

Poetry and Essay Submission Instructions

Students can submit one (1) original essay answering one of the following prompts:

  • The most inspirational story or person I’ve learned about during Black History Month is…
  • It’s important for people to learn Black history because…

Students can submit one (1) original poem about the following topics:

  • An inspirational person or event in Black history
  • Why it’s important to learn Black history

Deadline

The deadline for submissions is Monday, February 17 at 5 p.m.

Winners will be notified via the contact information provided. Winning submissions will be published at indianapolisrecorder.com.
