Bringing the Southern touch to Indy: Kountry Kitchen reopening

More by this author

Kountry Kitchen is making its return to the Indianapolis community. In 2020, the well-known and beloved soul food restaurant closed due to a fire. Known for its exquisite food and hosting many celebrities, the restaurant was able to move to a temporary location at 1417 Commerce Ave.

Opened in 1988 by Ms. Jessie, what started off as a six-seat countertop diner that served her homestyle cooking to the local neighborhood has become a nationally recognized soul food restaurant. Ms. Jessie’s daughter, Nell, came along and made this a family affair and also sprinkled in some of her own well-loved homestyle recipes. Keeping the family tradition alive, Isaac Wilson and Cynthia Wilson continued to serve those homestyle dishes in addition to other Southern dishes.

“Kountry Kitchen is an integral part of Indianapolis’ cultural tapestry. We’re not just reopening a restaurant; we’re reigniting a sense of community and connection through delicious soul food.” said Isaac Wilson.

In 2022, the restaurant announced the groundbreaking opening of the new home of Kountry Kitchen at 1831 N. College Ave. This facility will have over 14,000 square-feet of indoor and outdoor space, offering seating to 300 people on the inside and up to 150 people on the outdoor rooftop.

This October, Kountry Kitchen will open the doors of their new home to the public. Community members are ecstatic that the Southern touch found a new permanent home with great space and even better food. Breahna Woods is a former Indianapolis resident who loved eating at Kountry Kitchen, and she has frequently longed for their food since moving to Gallatin, Tennessee.

“I’m excited that they have a home again. Learning that they also have more space for the community to come and enjoy their food makes me really happy. I can’t wait to come home and have my family try some of the best soul food in the area,” said Woods.

To kick off this amazing accomplishment, restaurant guests will have the opportunity to reconnect and network with each other at the Sunday Brunch series hosted by Kountry Kitchen starting Oct. 22.
