Gentry shines at Super Shootout

More by this author

Josh Gentry had a banner day at the Eric Gordon Super Shootout as he led the boys County squad to a wild 129-128 victory over the boys City squad before an appreciative crowd at Nicoson Hall on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.

Bound for the University of North Dakota this fall, Gentry scored 28 points and grabbed six rebounds on a day that saw some of Indy’s finest young players compete with some great hustle and enthusiasm.

Brebeuf’s Michael Onuarah added 22 points for the County squad, which was coached by Pike’s Bill Zych. Cathedral’s Scott Hicks guided the City squad and was able to see his own Brandon Smith score a game high 30 points, while Chandler Thomas added 24 points on the day.

The girls opened the action on the day with a hard-played contest that saw the West team defeat the East squad by a score of 76-69.

Broad Ripple’s Chelsea Jamison scored 16 points and grabbed 7 boards en-route to game MVP honors to pace the West All Stars, who were coached by Stan Benge of Ben Davis. The East, coached by Covenant Christian’s Matt Williams, were paced by Arlington’s Tierra Golightly, who scored 19.

NOTES: Josh Gentry also picked up the trophy for the Indianapolis Recorder slam dunk competition. His best dunk was a tomahawk jam from straight on. Max Mollaun of Covenant Christian captured the three point shooting contest.

Eric Gordon obliterated the myth about professional athletes being inaccessible as he interacted with all in attendance, posing for numerous pictures and signing countless autographs. This soft spoken, polite young man is not only a star on the court in the NBA, but off of it as well.
