Free events at Madam Walker Legacy Center

The Madam Walker Legacy Center (MWLC) announced its free summer event lineup. The events will be online and include a hairstyling competition, a concert and youth-serving summer institute. 

To celebrate Father’s Day, the #DaddyDoDay father and daughter hairstyling. To enter the competition dads must post a picture styling their daughters hair on social media until June 10. All entries must use the hashtag #DaddyDoDay to be included in the competition and to be eligible for the cash prizes.  The competition will be shown on Facebook Live at noon June 18.

A live-streamed concert “The Suite Life,” will celebrate Black Music Month. Local artists Bashiri Asad, Okara Imani, Tribe Soul, Alaina Renae and Deon Forever will play covers of well-known songs by Black artist such as Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and Jill Scott. The free event will be live streamed from MWLC on June 25.

The summer institute for children ages 6-14 will be online 1-2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday July 6-29. Workshops will be taught by representatives from organizations such as NASA, Microsoft and the Asante Children’s Theatre. A free “Culture Kit” with supplies for each session is available.

Health department awards COVID recovery grants

The Marion County Public Health Department awarded $1 million to 86 organizations as part of the COVID Community Recovery Grant Program.

The grants, varying from $3,000 to $40,000, were given to Marion County organizations addressing economic and health disparities in minority communities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
