MXP shop, which opened in April 2023, houses numerous Black-Owned Businesses that offer products such as candles, wardrobes and paintings.

“MXP Shop kind of came out of nowhere, to be honest. I thought about having my own candle shop before, but I was a full-time social worker,” said MXP Shop owner Takisha Franklin, “As of January this year, I say I retired, but you never know, I could go back. I did want to branch out and do my candle business just to see what that was because I felt like I was pushed to do that more, and I just didn’t have the time.”

Franklin decided to take the leap of faith and purchased space on North Michigan Road.

“A month later after leaving my full-time job in January, my boyfriend stumbled upon this space, and it was for a good price. I was already out of work, so I said let’s just go for it.”

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Franklin is hosting a series of events to honor those who know of someone with or have breast cancer.

“Every year in October, I have held some type of event in awareness for breast cancer just to bring more exposure for ladies who have dealt with it, is going through it or know someone who is to just come out and have a good time,” said Franklin. “A few years back, I did host a networking event in reference to breast cancer; it was a Sip & Shop.”

Throughout the year, the entrepreneur hosts various events to bring together the community and connect businesses with each other, as she knows firsthand the value such events offer.

“As an entrepreneur myself, I used to attend a lot of vendor events, and since I have had this space since April, I slowed down and have been doing the bigger events. I just wanted a space where people would be able to network and come together. I wanted to be that person to put that on too,” said Franklin. “We host Sip & Paints every Saturday, biweekly Tantric Yoga on Tuesdays and Candle Pour Parties just to bring exposure to the shop of course but also to bring people together for our community.”

Saturday, Oct. 28 is the final Breast Cancer Awareness Series Sip & Paint. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
