Powerful Conversations on Race is a monthly series exploring topics around race, racism and its impact on society. The series pulls primarily from the Charleston Syllabus, a collection of essays and columns, along with excerpts from books and articles.
The series started for the first time in 2017 and lasted about 16 months before a relaunch in 2021.
At the time of the relaunch, LaShawnda Crowe Storm, community engagement director for Spirit & Place, said the goal is to create space for a ādifficult dialogueā and teach people how history impacts the present.
āAs long as we canāt do that, then weāre always going to be stuck here,ā she told the Recorder.
Facilitators use the civic reflection dialogue technique, which includes a shared source ā a book, film excerpt, etc. ā that helps people think about their values. It isnāt necessary to read the source material before the meeting.
