Pedaling with purpose, bicyclists will weave leisurely through historic neighborhoods, along scenic trails, and past iconic monuments at the History along Pogue’s Run Bike Tour on July 21.

“We are exploring where conservation and preservation intersect,” said Kelly Harris, heritage experiences manager at Indiana Landmarks.

The tour is hosted by Indiana Landmarks and Pogue’s Run Waterway Committee and is designed to highlight the sights and historical aspects of the near east side while encouraging the preservation of the area for generations to come.

“On this tour, we are exploring the architecture and the history, as well as the brand-new trail,” Harris said. “We are exploring multiple neighborhoods of the near east side.”

The intention of the tour goes beyond exploration and preservation, according to Harris. The rich history of George Pogue and his impact on Indiana.

A blacksmith from Connersville, Indiana, Pogue is known for being one of the first settlers where Indianapolis is now and creating a trail that corresponds with the present-day Brookeville Road. Indy Parks established the Pogue’s Run Trail alongside Pogue’s Run Creek downtown. The newly constructed trail will be explored by bikers and historians during the 3.5-hour tour.

In addition to the outdoor tour of Cottage Home Historic District, Windsor Park, Brookside Park, Spades Park and Highland Park, the tour will take viewers inside historic residences.

“It’s going to be very fun to go inside (the homes) and learn more,” Harris said. “It really highlights the community we are riding through.”

The event will be an important first tour of the new construction, Harris said, and will be an opportunity to showcase the small businesses in the area for economic growth.

“There’s really a lot to see around the east side,” Harris said.
