Virtual event for businesses

Business Equity for Indy (BEI) will have a virtual event 1-2 p.m. Oct. 25 to commemorate its first anniversary.  

BEI is a partnership of Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, Indy Chamber and Indianapolis Urban League. The event will reflect on the first year of BEI and provide updates on the Indy Racial Equity Pledge, actions implemented by the initiative and discuss ways to achieve future progress. 

The program includes a 15-minute Q&A session and will be moderated by WTLC radio personality Karen Vaughn. Speakers are Jeffrey Harrison, president and CEO of Citizens Energy Group and BEI chair; Tony Mason, president of Indianapolis Urban League; Steve Fry, senior vice president of human resources and diversity at Eli Lilly & Co.; and Dennis Murphy, president and CEO of IU Health.

Black Friday fundraiser 

Martindale Brightwood Community Development Corp. (MBCDC) will have Black Friday Give Back, a virtual fundraiser and neighborhood reunion Nov. 26.  

The free event will feature local artists, a DJ, trivia and prizes to raise funds to build and sustain affordable housing in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood.

Expanding coverage of sports 

The Next Generation Sports Initiative will expand The NextGen Sports Network to cover sports throughout Indianapolis and Central Indiana. NextGen Sports will now include college and professional sports coverage in addition to the continued focus on high school sports. NextGen’s coverage is currently online on the Recorder’s website and now will be streamed on PrepStream.net and live on the WTHR Facebook page

Through a partnership with FrontRunner Media NG, NextGen Sports will livestream one to two sports events per week, beginning with basketball season. FrontRunner Media NG and NextGen have livestreamed more than 200 games for the MIC Network in six years. The organizations will produce The NextGen Sports Show. The Next Generation Initiative provides free training and hands-on experience to youth interested in careers in media.

Free wills clinic 

The Indianapolis Bar Association will offer free wills and advance directive clinics for those who are at or below 250% federal poverty guideline standards. Those who meet the guidelines should apply online. A representative will contact and discuss next steps. Creating the documents takes about an hour. You must be able to make an appointment Oct. 26, Nov. 2 or Nov. 9. 

Safe trick or treating 

The 25th annual Safe Night Halloween will be 5-7 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The event will be on the north side of the fairgrounds at Celebration Park and trunk or treating will be outside.  

Safe Night Halloween is open to children ages 12 and under and must be accompanied by an adult. Parking and admission are free. Entry will be on Fall Creek Parkway or 38th Street.
