Center announces ‘manager of choice’ sessions

The fall calendar for United Way of Central Indiana’s Nonprofit Training Center includes sessions on becoming a “manager of choice,” grant writing, board development, volunteer management, outcomes and a full-day conference on capacity building, the United Way has announced.

United Way’s Nonprofit Training Center helps nonprofit organizations in Central Indiana increase their capacity to govern and manage themselves effectively by providing practical, affordable training and technical assistance through workshops and other experiences.

The sessions are at United Way’s 3901 N. Meridian St., headquarters unless otherwise indicated. On the calendar beginning in September are:

n Manager of Choice training, Sept. 14, 9 a.m. to noon, will be taught by Nancy Ahlrichs, United Way’s vice president for workforce development and diversity. The session will cover the five critical skills for becoming a manager of choice. It costs $30 for United Way agencies and $35 for others.

• Creating a Marketing Program Which Produces ROI, Sept. 20, 9 a.m. to noon, will be taught by Susan Appel, president, Boulevard Place Consulting. Participants will leave the workshop with a framework of a marketing plan or ways to complement their current marketing program. The cost is $30 for United Way agencies and $35 for others.

• The Indiana Nonprofit Capacity Building Conference and Indiana Achievement Awards is presenting a day-long conference on Sept. 28, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the IUPUI Campus Center in Indianapolis. It is aimed at chief executives, program staff and consultants in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, neighborhood and civic leaders, planners, evaluators and grant writers. • Grant writing for Beginners is a two-part training on Oct. 4 and Oct 5, 9 a.m. to noon. Taught  by Kim Donahue, director of United Way’s Nonprofit Training Center, the workshop will teach participants how to build a case and write a case statement, how to research funding sources, develop a budget, manage and evaluate a grant. The cost is $60 for United Way agencies and $70 for others.

• Best Practices in Board Development is scheduled on Oct. 11, 9 a.m. to noon. Taught by Donahue, the workshop will provide the tools and techniques to help nonprofit boards be productive, active and vital. The cost is $30 for United Way agencies and $35 for others.

• Outcomes Made Easy! is scheduled for Oct. 19, 9 to 11 a.m. In this hands-on workshop taught by Donahue, participants will learn the difference between outputs and outcomes and simple ways to put together a logic model. The cost is $25 for United Way agencies and $30 for other nonprofits.

• Volunteer Management is a two-part workshop on Nov. 1 and 2, 9 a.m. to noon. Presented by Alan Witchey and Tiffany Dow, director and manager, respectively, of United Way’s Volunteer Center, the course will explore components of an internal volunteer program, recruiting, marketing, skills-based volunteerism and evaluation of a program. The cost is $60 for United Way agencies and $70 for others.
