Following the resignation of District 5 Commissioner LaNier Echols, the IPS Board has released the process for filling Echols’ vacancy on the board. By law, the board is responsible for filling the vacancy by appointment until a successor can be elected and qualified at the next regular school board election, which will occur in November 2018. In accordance with Indiana law, the board released the following timeline:
- The Board will immediately accept resumes and letters of interest from prospective candidates outlining why he or she would like to serve on the board. Materials will be accepted until 5:oopm on Friday, December 2nd, 2016. Individuals interested in being considered for appointment to fill the vacancy should submit a resume and letter of interest electronically to mulhollandz@myips.org.
- To be eligible for consideration for appointment, interested candidates must currently live in District 5 and must have resided within the IPS school district for one year preceding the appointment. Prospective candidates may not have been convicted of a felony that has not been pardoned, reversed, vacated, or set aside.
- Following the December 2nd deadline, all qualified candidates’ materials will be sent to commissioners for review.
- The Board will hold an executive session to identify three final candidates on Wednesday, December 7th.
- A public interview of the final three candidates will be held on Thursday, December 8th at 6:00pm, in the IPS board room. Interested candidates should ensure they are available on this evening for a public interview.
- The board will vote to appoint a candidate to fill the District 5 vacancy at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, December 13th. To be appointed, a candidate must receive four votes.
