ā€˜A Small Act’

The IUPUI Committee on African and African-American Studies and the Indianapolis Museum of Art present “A Small Act,” Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in The Toby theater.

This film is about a Swedish Holocaust survivor named Hilde Back who decides to sponsor a young, impoverished Kenyan student named Chris by paying $15 per term to keep him in primary school.

Now, he’s a Harvard grad and a U.N. human rights lawyer. Chris decides to replicate Hilde’s generosity by starting his own scholarship fund, to educate bright kids in his village. But Chris is stunned by Kenya’s failing public schools as only two students pass the test to qualify for sponsorship.

With telling parallels to the United States’ education crisis, “A Small Act” prompts thoughts about altruism, education and poverty.
