The Madame Walker Theatre Center will commemorate the life and legacy of American icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in a one and a half hour commemorative celebration Jan. 21 at 12:15 p.m. in the historic Madame Walker Theatre.
The program titled, āKeep the Dream Aliveā will feature local artists performing songs filled with inspiration, community leaders sharing words of wisdom and dancers celebrating through praise movement. Monday is the official holiday observing the birth of Dr. King.
āDr. King was Americaās greatest champion of racial justice and equality &mdsh; a man who brought hope and healing to America,ā said Cynthia Bates, president of the Walker Theatre Center. āāKeep the Dream Aliveā will create a forum for Central Indiana residents ā Black, white, rich and poor ā to celebrate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered Dr. Kingās revolutionary spirit.ā
The annual celebration, free and open to the public, will showcase performances by the Walker/Flanner House Youth Chorale & Chamber Orchestra and Indy Youth Mime Dance Ministry to name a few.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Contributions will be accepted.
Preceding āKeep the Dream Aliveā will be the annual āFreedom Walkā from the Indianapolis Urban League Building to the Walker Theatre.
Doors at the Urban League open at 11 a.m. Light refreshments will be served. The procession will occur on the sidewalk beginning at noon.
