Indy Jazz Fest Sunset Series lineup announced

The Indy Jazz Fest has unveiled the artists taking the stage as part of the festival’s weeklong Sunset Series as it prepares to kick off its 13th year.

Held over a five-day period (Sept. 12-17) in many locations, the Indy Jazz Fest combines the great venues of Indianapolis with the diversity of jazz styles.

Sunset Series

ā€¢ Sept. 12, 7 p.m. – Aaron Diehl Trio at the Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave. The special opener will be hosted by guitarist Jeff McLaughlin, winner of the 2010 Owl Studios Emerging Artist Competition. Tickets are $25.

ā€¢ Sept. 13, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. – The Headhunters at the Jazz Kitchen. The former Herbie Hancock backing band combines funk, groove and Latin. Tickets are $25.

ā€¢ Sept. 14, 7 p.m. – Kevin Mahogany and the Steve Allee Trio at the Cabaret Columbia Club, 121 Monument Circle. Jazz standards and nostalgic gems. Tickets are $35, $45 and $55.

ā€¢ Sept. 15, 7 p.m. – WICR is presenting a special free concert featuring the Indy Jazz Fest Band at the Christel de Haan Fine Arts Center at the University of Indianapolis, 1400 E. Hanna Ave.

ā€¢ Sept. 16, 7:30 p.m. – Freda Payne pays tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and the Great Ladies of Jazz at Madame Walker Theatre Center, 617 Indiana Ave. Payne, known for her hit “Band of Gold,” will cover other jazz greats including Billie Holiday, Lena Horne and Dinah Washington. Tickets are $25.

ā€¢ Multi-Grammy award-winning musician George Benson will be the 2011 festival headliner as part of the outdoor grand finale Sept. 17 on the grounds of Opti Park in Broad Ripple. Additional Saturday Main Stage performers include Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Rufus Reid’s “Out Front” Quintet. Gates open at noon with music on three stages from 1 to 11 p.m.

Marsh Supermarkets will serve as the ticket outlet for purchasing advance discount tickets. Tickets are now on sale. Attendees can pay only $25 on the regular general admission ticket price of $30. New for 2011 is a preferred seating ticket and the return of the popular week-long Jazz Pass.

Bands needed for Broad Ripple Music Fest

The fifth annual Broad Ripple Music Fest, scheduled for Oct. 15, is now accepting band submissions. Local, regional and national artists with Indiana roots from every musical genre are encouraged to apply.

Artists have until Aug. 19 to complete the online application at www.broadripplemusicfest.com.

By Sept. 1, all bands will be notified and festival showcase announcements will begin.

Since the inaugural fest in 2007, the crowd has grown from roughly 1,500 attendees to more than 3,300 attendees last year. Last year’s festival had 125 artists on 16 stages – from the Vogue Theatre, dance clubs and neighborhood watering holes to family-friendly venues like the Indianapolis Art Center.

Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Girls Rock! Indianapolis, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building positive self-esteem in girls and encouraging creative expression through music.

Civic Theatre moves into new home

Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre has officially moved its theater and operations to its new home, the Tarkington Theater at The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

The theatre has opened registration for its expanded Jr. Civic education program, and next month it will host its Grand Opening Gala and stage its first production of the 2011-12 season, “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

In addition to the 500-seat, state-of-the-art proscenium theater, Civic also has access to extensive rehearsal space, classrooms and a 200-seat studio theater that will allow Civic to produce more intimate performances.

Stock the House fundraiser Aug. 28

Stock the House, a music festival started last year as a fundraiser to help foster youth transition to adulthood, is back for a second year at the Rathskeller, 401 E. Michigan St. on Aug. 28 from 2 to 8 p.m.

Headlining this year’s festival will be live performances from up and coming Los Angeles singer Aimee Allen, with members of Zanadoo as backup. Henle and The Loops will also perform.

New to this year’s festival will be entertainment by local comics, Matt Clemens and Brent Terhune. Clemens emcees Crackers Comedy Club in Indianapolis and Terhune got his start as a stand-up at age 16 in Indianapolis.

Donations of $5 to $20 will be accepted at the door and proceeds of a silent auction will assist former foster youth in the areas of education, employment and housing and their general transition into adulthood. The goal is to raise $25,000, according to Sam Criss, director of United Way of Central Indiana’s Connected By 25.

Free e-books, e-audio at library

Do you have an iPod, iPad, Sony e-reader, Nook, or other MP3 player or e-reader? IndianapolisMarion County Public Library has more than 20,000 e-books and downloadable audio books for free use. On Sept. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair St., librarians will present the basics of searching for and downloading these titles to a computer, portable player or reader at this e-book class. The class will be held in the Garden Conference Room.
