In the world of Tevin Studdard, every young writer feels like they’re scoring the winning touchdown or soaring through distant galaxies.

By helping students become published authors, Studdard turns their boundless imagination into reality, whether they’re navigating enchanted realms, conquering alien planets or dominating the sports arena.

Born and raised in Indy, Studdard started writing his own children’s books in March. Since then, he has written nearly 30 of his own and felt inspired to empower children to become authors themselves.

ā€œIf you can write a book in your youth, what can you accomplish 10 years from now?ā€ Studdard said. ā€œWho all can you take along with you? Now, you can teach somebody else how to write a book. It’s a step-by-step process.ā€

On June 13, Studdard began a six-week program at Frederick Douglass Park teaching kids ages 5-14 the process of self-publishing. The mission is simple: help kids become authors to make their future brighter.

ā€œYou’re helping the literacy rate,ā€ Studdard said. ā€œYou’re making kids excited about reading as well as giving them entrepreneur skills because now they can sell their own book.ā€

Aside from inspiring entrepreneurship, the books help inspire the community through education. Nearly 80 of the students from the program were honored on August 1 at Frederick Douglass Park.

ā€œIt’s a part of changing the community with educating and uplifting, and it’s kind of making it cool. Like, man, we write books,ā€ Studdard said.

Studdard is eager for the future of the program and hopes to empower 10,000 young authors by next year. Currently, Studdard is partnered with several organizations across the state and is looking to expand.

ā€œPeople are getting excited,ā€ Studdard said. ā€œKids are getting excited, and I see it in their eyes.ā€
