A Día de Muertos Celebration is coming to Downtown Indianapolis

Hosted by the Mexican Cultural Arts Center of Indiana (MéCACI), the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration will take place Nov. 1-3 at the Indiana State Capitol. The event, which is free to attend, aims to bring Latino youth and families together, honoring their cultural roots through a celebration of art, tradition and community

“Many Latino families in the United States don’t regularly attend a traditional Día de los Muertos ceremony,” Antonio Chapital, president of MéCACI, said in a statement. “For many Hoosiers, this event will be their first opportunity to engage with this deeply meaningful cultural tradition. At MéCACI, it’s our hope to create more events that enable Latinos to engage with their culture and community at every stage of their lives.”

MéCACI’s Día de los Muertos celebration aims to bridge a gap for Mexican Hoosiers living in Indianapolis, where cultural programming representing the city’s diverse population is often lacking, according to a press release.

The event will feature an educational short film on Día de los Muertos, as well as stories from multiple generations of Mexican Hoosiers, a Pan de Muerto and Mexican Hot Chocolate tasting and a community altar for guests to pause, reflect and honor their passed loved ones.

MéCACI’s Día de los Muertos celebration takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 1, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 2 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the Indiana Capitol Building. For more information, visit mecaci.com/events-1
