Applications are now open for the 2025 Amos Brown Summer Internship, dedicated to empowering students of color to explore careers in communications and advertising.
The paid, full-time program honors the legacy of Amos Brown, a celebrated Indianapolis radio host, columnist and community advocate who passed away in 2015. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 28.

The internship, launched in 2016 by Hirons in collaboration with Radio One, The Indianapolis Recorder and the Brown family, provides participants with hands-on experience in communications management, media or digital departments. Applicants must be current juniors, seniors, master’s students or recent graduates in good academic standing. Fields of study such as public relations, marketing, digital media, advertising and journalism are preferred.

Brown was a steadfast advocate for civic engagement, serving on boards like the Indianapolis Urban League, United Way and Indiana Black Expo. Brown hosted “Afternoons with Amos” on WTLC and wrote the “Just Tellin’ It” column in the Indianapolis Recorder.

In 2007, Brown was inducted into the Indiana Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame and was a two-time winner of the IBA Spectrum Award. His passion extended to ensuring communities of color were represented in vital initiatives, such as the 2010 Census, which he co-chaired with Hirons. The internship continues Brown’s mission by encouraging participants to become leaders and mentors for future generations.
A panel including Oveda Brown, Deon Levingston of Radio One, Robert Shegog of the Indianapolis Recorder and Sheila Smiley of Hirons will select this year’s intern.

Blake Hall, the 2023 intern, reflected, “My time at Hirons as the Amos Brown intern has been nothing short of amazing … This has been a truly meaningful and unforgettable experience.”
