Dr. Robert Sandhaus will talk about the most important known genetic cause of emphysema at a free education day in Indianapolis on Oct. 15.
Sandhaus will discuss Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1), which can cause both life-threatening lung disease in adults and liver disease at any age.
Sandhaus has one of the largest clinical practices specializing in Alpha-1 in the world, and has been researching lung disease and Alpha-1 for decades. He is clinical director of the Alpha-1 Foundation and medical director of AlphaNet, a not-for-profit organization which works to support research and provide disease management and prevention for those with Alpha-1.
Jean Moon Scrimager, RRT, will discuss the importance of pulmonary rehabilitation, and Bonnie Chakravorty, MSW, PhD, will talk about intimacy for people affected by Alpha-1 lung disease.
Other speakers will include Marlene Erven, executive director of the Alpha-1 Association, and John Walsh, president & CEO of the Alpha-1 Foundation.
A patient panel on lung transplants and caregiving will be led by Sue and Doug Smith, and Mary and Todd Pierce.
