Restaurant Spotlight: Sisters Comfort Food

More by this author

When you eat at Sisters Comfort Food, you’re family. Even as a first-timer, I felt right at home in the clean, bright and quaint cafe, which sits just inside the John H. Boner Community Center on the corner of 10th and Jefferson.

Sisters Linda and Cathy Legg opened the restaurant about two-and-a-half years ago, fulfilling a lifelong dream of serving their late mother’s rich recipes to the community.

The menu includes home-style favorites like fried or baked chicken, baby-back ribs, catfish fillets and meatloaf, in addition to several types of sandwiches, salads, burgers and hot dogs. Side items include collard greens, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, corn, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw and side salads. For dessert, the sisters offer sweet potato pie, Cathy’s peach cobbler, Linda’s chocolate chip cookies and ice cream by the scoop with toppings included in the price.

For my lunch I chose a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup and mustard, with a side of seasoned fries. My burger was made especially for me (I saw Cathy put it on the grill only after Linda had taken my order), and that freshness came across in the taste; it was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Even the veggies on the burger were fresh and flavorful. The hot fries were the perfect complement to my sandwich.

Sisters Comfort Food sits just across the street from a fast-food burger joint — I could see the drive-through from where I was sitting — but with the quality of Sisters’ burgers, the reasonable price and the short wait, the fast-food drive-through can’t even compete.

The atmosphere at Sisters is nice as well. With big corner windows looking out onto 10th and Jefferson, tons of sunshine comes in. The sisters’ friendly demeanor makes the place even brighter; they personally knew many of the customers who came in during my visit, and they treated me — a stranger — with that same kindness and care.

Sisters also offers take-out and catering, and the restaurant is available for nightly and weekend meeting space.

Linda said in the near future, Sisters Comfort Food will be able to accept EBT, and she hopes that gives a boost to business. Other future plans include installing better outdoor signage and an outdoor seating area. Even without these planned changes, Sisters is the perfect little lunch spot, and I can’t wait to go back.
