Pop-rock groups to play at IMS After Dark

The lineup of IMS After Dark activities continues to grow for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, as pop-rock band Crash and rock tribute band Appetite for Destruction will perform Aug. 26 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Crash, the band led by two-time World Superbike champion and former MotoGP rider James Toseland, will play from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. on the Red Bull Energy Station Stage in the IMS infield. Appetite for Destruction, a premier Guns ā€˜n Roses tribute band, will be on stage from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

The concerts are included in the regular $10 general admission. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.

On Aug. 27, electro-rock band Ghostland Observatory, acoustic pop/freestyle artist Kelley James and in-demand DJ Mick Boogie will perform on the Red Bull Energy Station Stage.

James will open the evening of music at 6:30 p.m., followed by Boogie. Ghostland Observatory will take the stage at 9 p.m. The concerts are included in the regular $20 general admission, with a special $15 admission for students. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.

IMS After Dark is the lineup of evening events creating a great party destination at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP. Activities include live music, food and drink and a gathering place to enjoy the motorcycle lifestyle on the new “Main Street” in the IMS infield.

Festiv-Ale beer tasting Aug. 20

Leading the fight against cystic fibrosis, the Indiana Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host the 12th annual Festiv-Ale, a Celebration of Beer Tasting.

The event will be Aug. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at 200 S. Meridian (the corner lot of Jackson and Meridian streets).

The event brings together beers from more than 30 Indiana and Midwest microbreweries and distributors. For those who prefer alternative beverages, samples of specialty martinis from Subterra Lounge will also be featured.

In addition to sampling beverages, guests will also be able to sample tasty cuisine from several area restaurants.

All food and drinks are included in ticket prices. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door with all proceeds benefiting the Indiana Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Indianapolis City Ballet’s Evening with the Stars

Indianapolis City Ballet (ICB) will have its third Evening with the StarsĀ performance on Sept. 10 at the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre at 8 p.m.

With the theme, International Dancers of the American Ballet, ICB has recruited a cast of some of the most exciting dancers from some of America’s finest companies.

Western art show, sale at Eiteljorg

Collectors and art enthusiasts from around the world are expected to attend the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art’s sixth annual “Quest for the West” Art Show and Sale, an invitational art exhibition and fixed-price sale featuring 50 of the nation’s top Western artists. The event provides a unique opportunity for veteran and novice collectors to meet and interact with artists.

Opening weekend activities, scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10, include the art sale, a gala reception, demonstrations and opportunities to meet participating artists.

The exhibition of artwork will open to the public on Sept. 11 and will remain on display until Oct. 9.

The 21st annual National Toy Truck’n Construction Show will be Aug. 19-21 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West (airport location).

Show hours on Aug. 19 are noon to 6 p.m.; on Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and on Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Library programs focus on Middle East

A series of programs that celebrate the diversity of Middle Eastern cultures, languages and people begins this month and continues throughout the fall at the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library.

“Journey Through the Middle East” features a variety of free programs for all ages that encompass Middle Eastern history, arts and crafts, dance, music, food and storytelling.

There will be presentations on Middle Eastern history through photographs with Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Bill Foley, Middle Eastern cooking demonstrations that highlight the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, an interactive workshop on Middle Eastern folk dancing, and Middle Eastern folktale presentations that also teach the use of body percussion.

Art programs will feature workshops on Egyptian weaving and creating Turkish Isnik tiles. Children can learn to create Afghanistan kites, Israeli dreidels, Turkish amulets, and Saudi Arabian camel bells. They can also learn about Arabic songs and lettering.

Call for bands for Broad Ripple Music Fest

The fifth annual Broad Ripple Music Fest, scheduled for Oct. 15, is now accepting band submissions. Local, regional and national artists with Indiana roots from every musical genre are encouraged to apply. Artists have until Aug. 19 to complete the online application at www.broadripplemusicfest.com.

By Sept. 1, all bands will be notified and festival showcase announcements will begin.

Last year, the festival had 125 artists on 16 stages, from the Vogue Theatre, dance clubs and neighborhood watering holes to family-friendly venues like the Indianapolis Art Center.
