UniverSoul Circus returns for Expo

“The Awesomest Show Ever” to take place under the big top is heading to Indianapolis as UniverSoul Circus brings an electrifying and interactive single ring extravaganza to the parking lot of Lafayette Square Mall, July 12-17. Tickets are on sale now.

UniverSoul Circus is nationally recognized for its unique brand of high-energy audience interaction and thrilling circus artistry. Whether you’re dancing in the aisles with the ringmaster, rapping to the Sugarhill Gang, volunteering for the “Soul Train Line,” singing a 2,200-part harmony with the kids to SpongeBob SquarePants or enjoying a musical finale with the entire cast line-dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” there’s something for everyone to interact with at UniverSoul Circus.

Go green at Garfield Park

Garfield Park Conservatory offers activities and events to keep families engaged this summer, from gardening to nature programs.

Junior master gardeners

Plant your own garden, learn about growing food, explore the garden for critters, and more. The Junior Master Gardener program returns this summer to the Children’s Garden at Garfield Park. This nine-week program allows children to plant, tend to and harvest their own garden area while learning about a different gardening topic each week.

Junior Indiana master naturalist

This nine-week program is a great opportunity for any child interested in the outdoors to get a hands-on learning experience. The courses feature knowledgeable guests who will speak about Indiana plants, animals, soils and outdoor skills.

Upon completion of coursework and volunteer hours, each child will earn his or her Junior Indiana Master Naturalist certification.

Little green thumbs

Bring your little gardener to enjoy the Children’s Garden. Participants will have the opportunity to plant, care for and harvest crops in the garden at this monthly program.

Bonsai Show

Join the Indianapolis Bonsai Club as they display a number of their unique bonsai plants. Learn more about bonsai from club members and purchase your own from vendors.

Theater hosts ā€˜playground’ for performers

The Sapphire Theatre Company introduces Performance Playground, an ongoing workshop series that takes place during the first Monday night of every month aimed at offering skill-building tools to people interested in theater and performance.

Trainers have more than 30 years of professional directing, acting, and casting experience. Each session costs $22 and is located on the second floor of The Elbow Room, 605 N. Pennsylvania St.

Civic Theater has new location, shows

This August the Indianapolis Civic Theater starts its new season at a new location, the Tarkington Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

With showings of plays and musicals such as “The Drowsy Chaperone” and “Willy Wonka,” this community theater offers something for everyone.

Phoenix Theatre Brew-Ha-Ha

Brew-Ha-Ha is an annual benefit for the Phoenix Theatre, a professional non-profit theater presenting contemporary, issue oriented plays and musicals.

The outdoor block party features samples of the best brews from local, regional and national microbreweries as well as entertainment from local bands.

Play follows 4 women and their struggles

Izola Bird’s play, “The Straw Women Who Made Bricks,” is coming to the Basile Theater at the Indiana Historical Society, 450 W. Ohio St.

The play tells the story of Ms. Knelan, Katherine Foley, Jackie Albright and Allison McLeod – four women dealing with the overwhelming struggles of drugs, money and infidelity. Each woman finds the need to run away from her problems and eventually ends up in a place called Peace Valley Resort, hidden in the hills of Virginia.

While in Peace Valley, the women will have to face their demons and some harsh realities.

This will be the second play written by Bird, an already published writer of three books, The Sweet Grapes, Burning the Mattress and her most recent novel, The Witch Who Stole My Husband.

The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. June 18.

Civic Theater presents ā€˜Beanstalk: The Musical!’

The Indianapolis Junior Civic Theater presents “Beanstalk: The Musical” June 17-22 on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $9 for general audiences and $6 for day care groups. Let your kids experience the timeless tale of Jack and his magical beanstalk at the theater on the campus of Marian University, 3200 Cold Spring Road.
