Baptist ministers raise $166,000 for Haiti

The Baptist Minister’s Alliance of Indianapolis and Vicinity, a historic religious organization celebrating 141 years of existence, recently held its installation of officers and a help for Haiti program at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church.

Rev. Dr. Stephen J. Clay, the senior pastor of Messiah was installed as the organization’s new President. The theme for this year’s program was “Embracing Our History and Celebrating Our Future,” inspired by the scripture Joshua 1:5-6.

Many local pastors who are part of this conference came together with community and civic leaders to be a part of this celebration. Rev. Dr. Freddy James Clark, senior pastor of Shalom Church (City of Peace) from St. Louis, Mo., delivered a spirit-filled message challenging us to respond to the call of ministering to others.

In addition to a ceremony installing officers, the Baptist Minister’s Alliance collected over $166,000 to support relief efforts in Haiti through a Christian based missionary organization, Convoy of Hope. This was done in collaboration with Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr., senior pastor of Eastern Star Church, who spearheaded this effort.

Convoy of Hope, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, feeds the hungry and provides pure drinking water to people in need across the United States and around the world.  To date, the organization has assisted 28 million people in 112 countries and 45 States.

Lauded for its effectiveness and efficiency, Convoy of Hope mobilizes thousands of volunteers each year to deliver food and supplies and to offer hope to the poor and suffering.

“It is important for us, members of the Baptist Minister’s Alliance, to help those who are suffering from the after effects of the earthquake in Haiti,” Clay said. “We realize that by coming together collectively, we can have a greater impact, which is represented by the $166,000 that we were able to raise.”

The Baptist Minister’s Alliance vision is to further equip pastors as they develop their respective congregations for a greater impact on the City of Indianapolis. The organization provides opportunities for pastors to develop in the art of preaching and pastoral care through clinics and critical conversations with a variety of colleagues who have excelled in these areas.

The Alliance is also designed to proactively address social issues that adversely affect our community.
