School on Wheels Needs Your Help To Fill Volunteer Positions

More by this author

School on Wheels seeks to recruit, train and place 40 new volunteer tutors for the fall 2014-2015 school semester. Our one-on-one tutoring program supports homeless students in grades K-12, and helps break the cycle of homelessness through education.Ā

Our volunteer-driven tutoring program enhances educational opportunities for children impacted by homelessness. By demonstrating consistency and encouragement during the tutoring hour, tutors help children experiencing homelessness understand that education is not only important but that it is possible despite their circumstances.Ā

To become a School on Wheels tutor, you must be at least 11 years of age.Ā  Ages 11-13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.Ā  Tutors are asked to commit to one hour each week for a 15-17 week semester. We will work with your schedule to ensure that you will have the opportunity to tutor at the same shelter weekly.Ā  Interested tutors must complete a volunteer application, participate in a short phone interview, pass a criminal background check and attend a training/orientation session. This will allow you to learn more about the tutoring services you will be providing and how to make the most impact as a volunteer.Ā Ā
